É o passado de there is e there are. Segue todas as regras de afirmação, negação e interrogação do presente.

Afirmativa
There was (singular)
There were (plural)

Negativa
There was not / There wasn’t (singular)
There were not / There weren’t (plural)

Interrogativa
Was there? (singular)
Were there? (plural)

Exemplos:

There was a man who lived in that castle. (Havia um homem que morava naquele castelo.)

There was a feeling of humiliation floating in the air. (Havia um sentimento de humilhação flutuando no ar.)

There wasn’t happiness in my life. (Não havia felicidade na minha vida.)

There was not a giraffe there at the zoo. (Não havia uma girafa lá no zoológico.)
